It starts tonight!!!!! NANOWRIMO!!!!

Posted by wevmax on October 31, 2007

That’s right! The writing frenzy starts tonight!

So I started talking to a few people to try to convince them to attempt to write a novel as well (i’m thinking the more the merrier) and manage to enlist some buddies from work likr Andy, Monica who “claims” she is going to do it (she is a good friend, but can be flakier than a buttermilk biscuit when it comes to commitment- LOL) , my sister, and even my 16 year old daughter! People are beginning to think that i’m running some kind of scam with the way that i’m pushing this “Hey, let’s write a book together” line! LOL

Today I also received an e-mail from the Ft. Lauderdale ML, who is the official “event coordinator” (not her official title, but work with me here) for the Ft. Lauderdale area and she is planning on setting up a write-off event in my area soon! Perfect for me since my only previous option was to drive all the way down to Miami. Since she is a “seasoned NaNoWriMo writer” I asked her how this has worked out for her and she has participated in this event 7 times and completed it (50k words in 30 days) twice! So the cards are stacked against me finishing this on time, but I like to think that I thrive when the odds are not in my favor!

I’ve also been thinking about a few things about my book, some potential endings, and i’m thinking of a reversal twist at the end… but overall i’m feeling excited. Let’s see how long this will last! For now, I plan to start writing promptly at 12:01 tonight and probably write an update tomorrow. So here goes nothing! :-)

Hello world!

Posted by wevmax on October 27, 2007

Hello everyone! I’ve started writing in the world of blogging before, but this one is going to be a bit different. I created this blog on October 27th 2007, wrote my first blog (this one) on the 28th, and expect to write in it religiously for the month of November. Why November you wonder?

This year I have decided to join thousands of other would be writers and write my first draft of a Novel. 50,000 words in 30 days. If this sounds familiar, it is probably because you’ve already heard of NaNoWriMo… or National Novel Writing Month where you can make a commitment to yourself to write a the novel that you’ve always wanted to write within the month of November. There was a good article about it recently in the NY Times if you want to read it. Earlier this year I picked up their book, “No Plot, No Problem!” and read the whole thing in a few days. I was intrigued by the idea and was trying to see if I would start writing my novel before November but I didn’t. I signed up for the reminder and I liked the silly e-mail that I received about it, but since then i’ve been pretty excited about it. I’m telling all of my friends, my families, and talking about it every chance I get. (This is one of the first steps which I like to call “Making an ass of yourself if you don’t do it!”). So step one COMPLETE!

Hence I award myself the following NaNoWriMo emblem! (As seen below…. cool huh? Alot more where that came from! :-)

I know that it is not going to be all roses. I already even got upset at my girlfriend this last Friday. The Thursday before I convinced my sister to also attempt to write her own novel in 30 days, I was inspired by my muse and I started writing a rough outline of the chapter summaries, and a general plot for my 30 day affair. I must have written up to chapter 10 before I started getting incoherent, and my ideas started dissolving… but it was a start and I was pretty damn excited about those 1st 10 chapters so far! So Friday morning as we are getting dressed to get to work I start telling her about my rough plot and how excited I was getting about my chapter summaries. Want to know her first words (which she mumbled under her breath?), “Aaahh… your not writing a book.” After a pretty loud, “What did you just say?” I was pretty upset. Ok, I’ll give her credit that i’m always saying all of these things that I WANT to do, and all of these ideas which I THINK are great, but it pissed me off that she couldn’t even humor me and say “What is it about honey? Sounds interesting!” Suffice to say, at the end of November if she’s right, I’ll have to eat these words, or she’ll have to eat her words! Let’s just say I have a greater determination… and that’s where this blog will come into play as well. If you have any words of encouragement… please send them… as you can see, i’m not getting them at home! :-) Or if like most women, you want to take her side (I had a rough poll on the issue of women supporting their men… unfortunately most of my women friends answered mostly the same… which isn’t a good sign… but I digress).

From time to time i’m sure that I’ll mention what’s going on in my writing, my 30 day writing life, or how i’m procrastinating in writing my novel (so that hopefully some of you will share some words of encouragement… or tough love. Whichever gets me through my 50,000 words!). Either way, I expect to write here, what i’m doing on my novel and in my life for the month of November.

One last positive note, I seemed to have also convinced my 16 year old daughter to attempt this feat herself. So if anything I will try to give her more words of encouragement as well, and for all of my friends which I will ask to check up on my block for my progress… I urge you to encourage her as well. So i’m getting pretty excited about it, and I can’t wait till the 1st of November!

So to all NaNoWriMo’s out there! Let’s bring on the words!!!!! Good luck everyone!

And for all those not writing… Please be a bit more encouraging and supportive to us delirious and delusional misfits with dreams of accomplishing our novels… at least for the month of November! It isn’t TOO MUCH to ask is it?

Till next time… Wevmax!
